The Cicada’s are coming!

I have always called cicadas locust. I always mix them up… not by appearance, but by habit. I think a lot of people do. A locust looks more like a grasshopper. Cicadas are related to aphids and leafhoppers.
Its just about that time of year for them to come out. I get mixed up about how many years it is when they emerge from the ground in huge numbers… I believe its every 17years. Most cicadas have a two to five year life cycle. Three species have an insanely long 17year cycle. These are the ones due to hit the Midwest and northeast this year, and hit them hard. They will emerge at rates of up to 1.5 million individuals per acre! Yowser!

To check out a few more photos I have of Cicada’s coming out of their shells
