Hi KT, All Hallows Eve is a big deal to many around here as we live very near to where the Pendle Witches practised their craft in the 17th century. They were sent to Lancaster assizes and then hung along with the covens leader Alice Nutter, who was considered a very respected person in the community until she was found out.
One of their methods was to use a berry from a plant called Belladonna (deadly nightshade) which is actually called Atropa Belladonna (after the Greek Goddess Atropos), because it cuts the thread of life. The symbolism of trick or treat is great fun though and I enjoy that very much, sometimes dressing for the occasion which gives the kids a big surprise when I answer the door! Kind Regards Supernova.
Thank you, Supernova for stopping by! That is very intresting. I have been looking up information on The trials of the Pendle witches this morning. I love history so I appreciate and thank you for the information! I am sure you know how Halloween is commercialized here in the states… some take offense to how commercialized/commercialised we can be towards the holiday. I LOVE Samhain. All Hallows. All Hallow’s Eve. Hallow E’en. Halloween. The most magical night of the year, and I so do enjoy the costumes, parties, and the candy!
I hope you have a very lovely weekend!
